Corning has announced that its board of directors has approved a capital expenditure (capex) plan to expand the company's LCD glass and Gorilla glass manufacturing in response to strong market demand.
The company will invest approximately US$800 million to construct a new LCD glass substrate facility in the China. With the support of the Beijing municipal government, Corning will locate the new facility in the Beijing Digital TV Industry Park within the Beijing Economic Technological Development Area. The manufacturing plant will have up to 8.5G glass-melting and finishing capabilities. Groundbreaking is planned for September of this year, with production slated to begin in the first half of 2012.
Corning's investments will also include construction projects in other regions to expand capacity for two of its flagship products: Eagle XG LCD glass substrates and Gorilla glass. As previously announced, the company has restarted an expansion project at its Taichung, Taiwan LCD glass facility and is ramping up idled capacity at its facility in Shizuoka, Japan to produce Gorilla glass for various applications. The company now intends to expand further in Taichung under the new capital expenditure plan, with additional capacity projected to come on line in the first half of 2012.

In a company statement released on December 9, Corning vice chairman and CFO James B Flaws indicated that worldwide LCD TV sales increased 45% on year in October, the second-highest monthly growth rate of the year.
He pointed out that the October sales strength occurred in all major TV markets, with LCD TV unit sales up 28% in the US, 20% in Europe, 115% in China, and 73% in Japan.
"In the US, LCD TV sales remained strong throughout all of November, including the week of Black Friday," Flaws said.
"As a result, panel makers continue to run at high utilization rates in the fourth quarter and glass supply is very tight. We expect glass demand to remain this way through the remainder of the quarter. Therefore, we are raising our fourth-quarter volume estimates to flat to up slightly," Flaws said.

Corning Inc. is confident revenue in the current fourth quarter will come in at more than $1 billion and is seeking acquisition targets after its purchase of Axygen BioScience Inc. in September, its top executive said.
"We're looking around. It hasn't been a very active effort in the past seven or so years but we are starting to reactivate," said Peter Volanakis, Corning's president and chief operating officer, in a recent interview.
The New York-based company, the world's biggest producer of glass used in liquid-crystal-display televisions by volume, acquired all of the shares of laboratory equipment maker Axygen from American Capital Ltd. for about $400 million. Axygen was integrated into Corning's life sciences segment.
Corning also has operations in display, telecommunications, specialty materials and environmental technologies.続きを読む »
