Quanta receives tablet PC orders from Amazon, say upstream sources
Taiwan-based notebook maker Quanta Computer has recently received OEM orders from Amazon for its reported tablet PC, according to sources from upstream component makers. The device's monthly orders during the peak season are expected to reach about 700,000-800,000 units.
Quanta is expected to start shipping as soon as the second half of 2011 with the orders to contribute more than NT$100 billion (US$3.5 billion) to Quanta's annual revenues in 2011, the sources noted. In response to the report, Quanta declined to comment on its clients.
In addition to Amazon, Quanta is currently also the tablet PC OEM partner of RIM and Sony, while the company has also been aggressive in contact with Lenovo in hoping to land orders from the company for its second-generation LePad.

Quanta Computer has announced plans to set up a joint venture with US-based 3M in Singapore for developing projected capacitive touch technology in order to gain profits from the large PC and related markets.
Quanta indicated that touch technology is the trend for the future industry and Quanta has always had a technological cooperation relationship 3M in the past and believes that it is necessary for the two companies to cooperate in the touch technology field. Furthermore, future cooperation between Quanta and 3M will focus on PC product lines such as personal computers, all-in-one PCs and tablet PCs.
Quanta announced strategic cooperation with 3M during Computex 2010 and displayed a notebook with 3M's touch technology. The cooperation for the JV will focus on developing projected capacitive touch technology and may expand the cooperation to touch modules, sensors, electronic systems and products, Quanta added.
In addition to MID products for touch related business, Quanta has recently started shipments for RIM's Playbook.
Quanta is the largest manufacturer for all-in-one PCs with orders from the world-leading US-based vendor, as well as other PC vendors, and may land touch related orders from them when technology improves.

Quanta pointed out that its two existing plants in China are already capable of handling its targeted shipment goal of 50 million notebooks for 2010, and so it is not in a rush to get the new plant up and running.
Sources from notebook players commented that Quanta wants to establish the Chongqing plant in order to better serve its client, Hewlett-Packard (HP). Quanta and Inventec are estimated to manufacture 80% of HP's notebooks in 2010.
The company will face transport obstacles at the Chongqing plant in the short term as the shipments around the region are currently limited to by air, however, the Chongqing local government is schedule to finish building a railroad which will connect the region directly to Europe in 2012.
Most of Quanta's upstream component makers reacted conservatively to the announcement, saying they will not make any moves until Quanta is clear in its actions for the new plant.

television development joint venture with Taiwan's Quanta Computer Inc, the
Nikkei business daily said on Saturday.
Sanyo and Quanta Computer, the world's largest contract notebook PC maker, said
in March 2006 they would set up a venture to make and sell flat TVs.
But shortly after the announcement, Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp agreed to buy
Quanta Computer's liquid crystal display (LCD) unit, Quanta Display, dealing a
blow to their cooperation even before the venture was established.
The two firms set up the TV joint venture, Sanyo Visual Technology, later in
2006 with a capitalization of 100 million yen ($937,300), but the scope of the
venture was limited to product development and joint procurement of parts and
materials.
The Nikkei said the announcement to end the venture, owned 81 percent by Sanyo
and the remainder by Quanta, is set for January 30.
A Sanyo spokesman said the company is studying a wide range of options to
expand its TV business, but nothing has been decided on the future of its joint
venture with Quanta Computer.
Sanyo, which has actively been shedding its non-core assets to focus on
mainstay operations such as rechargeable batteries, said on Monday it would sell
its mobile phone business to electronics maker Kyocera Corp for 40-50 billion
yen.
The overall shipments from Quanta to Philips are expected to reach 400,000 units in 2007, said Taiwan-based panel makers.
Quanta declined to comment on the orders.
Quanta president Michael Wang earlier said that the company aims to ship over one million LCD TVs in 2007. The top-five LCD TV vendors are all target customers for Quanta, said Wang.
Last September, TPV Technology, the world's largest LCD monitor maker, officially took over monitor and entry-level LCD TV manufacturing from Philips. Since the transition, TPV has been producing monitors and entry-level LCD TVs for Philips.
Philips plans to ship nine million LCD TVs in 2007, up from more than five million units in 2006, according to research firm DisplaySearch. Philips captured 12.2% of the global LCD TV market in the third quarter, trailing after Samsung Electronics and Sharp, said the research firm.
The existing Aachen, Germany LCD TV production base is just a transitional base for Quanta, Wang pointed out. Quanta chose Germany as its LCD TV production base, as initially it was more competitive than Eastern Europe in terms of time to market, tariff, and geography. However, once shipments surpassed one million units from this site, it was inevitable that Quanta would move its production base to Eastern Europe, Wang noted. The Aachen site is currently focused on assembling relatively simple LCD TVs in small volumes, he added.
Poland will be the first priority spot for Quanta, Wang said, considering that leading players like LG.Philips LCD and Sharp both house production facilities there. Turkey, however, is a less likely choice as a production base despite leading TV vendors including Beko and Vestel being located there. He explained that Turkey is too far from Western Europe and the recent currency appreciation may also increase production costs.
While preparing to expand its LCD TV production in Europe, Wang reiterated the company's strengthening partnership with the Pouchen Group in China. He anticipates that TechView, an LCD monitor joint venture between Quanta and Pouchen, will house an annual capacity (both LCD TV and monitor) of about 10 million units in 2007 and serve as a vital OEM partner of Quanta.
